When Faith’s iPhone alarm goes off at six the next morning, she is already standing at the window in her yoga pants and sneakers, a sweatshirt around her waist. As she turns it off, she tries to recall when she last had a decent night’s sleep. Her head throbs; she ought to pop two Advil.

At the bottom of the staircase she finds Edward holding on to a portable handset, bleary-eyed.

“I’ve got a call with Zurich, then London. Where’re you going? Isn’t it too early to be out? It’s goddamn dark outside.”

“The Lake Trail, like most mornings. Except I have to be at work soon for a shipment—an estate’s in.”

“The trail at this hour?”

“Edward, please, promise me later today you’ll let me know about the loans. I’ll be waiting.”

The call comes in. “Hello, hello, Fabian.”

His greeting sounds self-possessed, like the Edward she knows. Her Edward.

A chill through Faith’s heart. She ought to have texted Lucas, ought to have canceled. Instead she waves, blows a kiss to her husband, and races into the garage. How it’s done, she supposes, once your desolation is greater than your moral code. When you’re ready to hear what your old flame has to say and you envision what might have been.
